Overview
What Does It Mean to Gamble Responsibly?
Responsible gambling means treating gambling as entertainment — something you do for enjoyment within a budget you have set in advance, not as a way to earn money or deal with stress. The house always has a mathematical edge over time.
Key principles: set a budget before you play and stick to it; treat losses as the cost of the entertainment; do not chase losses; take breaks; and never gamble with money you need for essential expenses.
All UK-licensed casinos are legally required to provide responsible gambling tools and to take steps to identify customers who may be experiencing gambling harm. If you feel a casino is not acting responsibly, you can report this to the UK Gambling Commission.
Tools Available to You
Safer Gambling Tools at UKGC Casinos
All casinos licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must provide the following tools. You can find them in your account settings.
Deposit Limits
Set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits directly in your casino account. All UKGC-licensed casinos are required to offer this tool. Limits take effect immediately. Increasing a limit requires a 24-hour cooling-off period.
Session Time Limits
Set a maximum session length. You will be logged out automatically when the timer expires. Some casinos also provide reality checks — periodic reminders showing how long you have been playing.
Loss Limits
Cap the amount you can lose in a given period. Once you reach the limit, you cannot place further bets until the limit resets. This is distinct from a deposit limit and provides tighter control.
Self-Exclusion
Request a voluntary self-exclusion directly from a casino for a period of six months to five years. The casino is legally required to close your account and refund any remaining balance.
GAMSTOP National Exclusion
GAMSTOP is a free national self-exclusion scheme. Registering blocks access to all UKGC-licensed gambling websites and apps simultaneously. You choose a period: six months, one year, or five years.
Account Closure
You have the right to close your casino account at any time. The casino must process this request promptly. Any bonus funds will be forfeited, but your cash balance must be returned.
Problem Gambling
Warning Signs to Watch For
Problem gambling can develop gradually. Some signs that gambling may be causing harm:
- !Spending more than you planned on a regular basis
- !Gambling to recover losses ("chasing")
- !Borrowing money to gamble
- !Neglecting work, family, or responsibilities due to gambling
- !Feeling anxious, irritable, or depressed when not gambling
- !Hiding gambling activity from friends or family
- !Gambling being the primary way you relax or cope with stress
If you recognise several of these signs in your own behaviour, speaking to someone can help. Support is free, confidential, and non-judgmental.
